Government
Agencies
There are three Federal government agencies involved with U.S.
immigration matters.
The Dept. of Homeland Security's United States Citizenship &
Immigration Services (formerly the Immigration & Naturalization
Service) operates district offices in major metropolitan areas
and four large regional service centers located in Vermont,
Texas, Nebraska, and California. The USCIS is responsible for
processing nonimmigrant and immigrant applications and petitions.
The Department of State operates through U.S. Embassies and
Consulates throughout the world. The Department of State is
responsible for issuance of nonimmigrant and immigrant visas.
The Department of Labor operates regional and state offices
throughout the U.S. In certain cases, it must certify that there
exists a lack of qualified U.S. laborers for a particular position.
The above agencies are not known for their inter-cooperation
or information-sharing when dealing with U.S. immigration matters.
